Bathroom Storage Ideas for Small Spaces

If your bathroom is small enough to touch both walls while standing inside, you’re not alone. Bathrooms tend to be the smallest room in the house, yet are used to store the most varied collection of times. Whether your bathroom is standard sized or smaller than average, you’ll probably have to create enough space to store extra linens, make-up, beauty supplies, and toiletries. While traditional storage cabinets may provide much-needed storage space, many bathrooms can still use more. For those whose bathrooms are low on space, here’s some creative storage solutions for your small bathroom.

Shelf above the Door

If you’re lucky enough to have high ceilings in your bathroom, the space above your bathroom door is prime real estate. Although this space isn’t realistic for items you use every day, it’s a great space to store cleaning supplies bought in bulk, extra rolls of toilet paper, or old magazines. Installation is simple: use wood screws to secure a pair of wooden shelf brackets to either side of the door frames. Then screw the shelf to the brackets and voila! You’ll have yourself a convenient above-the-door shelf in no time. To make retrieval of items easier, consider keeping items in small, handled boxes.

Towel Bars

Very few bathrooms have enough space to hang towels –especially if the bathroom is used by more than one person. If you find yourself with inadequate space to store towels, consider installing a few towel bars behind your bathroom door. By stacking towel bars behind closed doors, you’ll remedy the space shortage issue and be able to use space more efficiently. In order for this to work effectively, the door should be flat or single-paneled. Additionally, it’s easier to affix towel racks to a wooden door rather than a wallboard or plaster wall.

Mason Jars for Small Items

Ideal for smaller items like cotton balls and Q-Tips, mason jars affixed to a wall are a great space-saving solution. For those interested in adding a bit of functional flair to the bathroom, antique mason jars in different styles and colors can be found in most antique stores. By fixing mason jars to a piece of wood and nailing the piece of wood to a bare wall, all bathroom items will be within reaching distance. For the style-conscious, the wood and jars can be painted or decorated to match your bathroom’s color scheme.

Shoe Organizers

If you don’t have enough space to add shelves or live in an apartment and aren’t allowed to drill holes into your walls, you can get a ton of storage without drilling holes by using an over-the-door shoe organizer to store your bathroom items. By utilizing an over-the-door organizer, your make-up and bathroom products will be kept off the countertops and out of view. For additional convenience, use a clear organizer so you can see exactly where everything is without having to dig through the pockets.

On the Wall Storage

In most cases, the sink or vanity countertop is generally the only countertop surface in the bathroom. By paying attention to space on the walls and installing a shelf or dishwasher-safe wall-hung containers, your bathroom items will still be within reach without sacrificing precious counter space. In lieu of a shelf, consider installing spice racks to store the items you use on an everyday basis. By adding a coat of paint or stain, you can color-coordinate the spice racks with the rest of your bathroom decor.
